Frequently Asked Questions

A box cricket lane is an enclosed indoor cricket area with netting down the sides and across the back, so every ball stays inside the lane. You bat, bowl and field in the same space without anything running away from you. At Pad & Paddle the lanes sit inside a 26,000 square foot arena alongside the pickleball courts.

An outdoor net is open to weather, wind, light and whatever the ground staff left in the surface. An indoor lane is enclosed and out of all of that, and it plays the same every session, so the bounce you got last week is the bounce you get today. That repeatability is what makes a technical change stick.

The green surface is a purpose-laid indoor cricket surface rather than a turf wicket, so there are no cracks, footmarks or damp patches to read. Bounce stays even from the first ball to the last. That is useful when you are grooving technique, because a mistake is genuinely your mistake and not the pitch misbehaving.

Yes. The lanes are built for cricket rather than squeezed into a gym, so a bowler can run in and deliver with a full, normal arm action. What indoors does change is shot selection. Lofted drives and big slog sweeps are off the menu, so batters spend their time playing straight, along the ground and into gaps.

Usually it comes on quicker and truer. There is no damp outfield or worn footmark taking pace off the ball, so the surface behaves the same on every delivery. Batters often find they have to play slightly earlier than they would on a slow outdoor pitch, and edges tend to carry rather than dying into the ground.

Yes. An enclosed lane suits wicketkeeping practice, since every ball comes straight back to you and nothing disappears to the boundary. Close catching, reaction catches off the netting and throwing drills all work in the same space. The one thing it will not replace is high catching, which needs open sky above you.

Both. Bowlers get a measured length, a consistent surface and instant feedback on line, and can bowl spell after spell without walking to fetch the ball each time. Batters get repeatable deliveries and plenty of them. Most sessions end up covering both, with players taking turns bowling at each other.

You can train alone. A bowling machine feeds repeatable deliveries so you can bat solo for a full session, and daily one-on-one sessions are available if you would rather have someone working with you. Coming with a partner works well too, since you can swap between batting and bowling and keep the session moving.

Wear clean indoor sport shoes with a non-marking sole. Spikes are not usable on an indoor cricket surface and will damage it. Beyond that, normal training kit is fine, so shorts or trackpants and a t-shirt. If you plan to face pace, bring the protective gear you would normally wear for outdoor batting.

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons the lanes exist. North Texas summers push outdoor sessions into early morning or late evening, and even then the heat drains the quality out of them. Indoors you can bat at 2pm in July at the same intensity you would in November, and nothing gets rained off.
